Holding a chainsaw, a young man bursts into the Prime Minister’s home and took his wife and their Latvian housekeeper hostage. Although the situation contains magical and messianic elements, everything unfolds in an everyday atmosphere: a peperonata is being prepared, a melon liqueur is being drunk, and a cardboard box needs to be opened. And yet, from that ordinary setting, an agreement may emerge that will change the course of world history. The story focuses on macroeconomics, on how the advantages enjoyed by the wealthiest are based on the exploitation of the poorest, and how the state is complicit in this speculation. It focuses on communism and a jubilee that would cancel all debts, like those that used to be declared thousands of years ago in Mesopotamia and Egypt, after a new king or pharaoh had ascended the throne. Capitalism seems to have reached a terminal stage in which it survives by stoking pointless desires, whilst also exacerbating injustice and oppression. Perhaps we do not have to resign ourselves to this outcome. Perhaps we can imagine something else.
